Project
We propose to develop a platform that enables easy access to high resolution images for histological applications. Our preliminary study demonstrates how the VISOAR tool developed at the SCI Institute (based on the ViSUS framework) can help medical professionals including medical students, pathologist and clinicians in the analysis and visualization of images generated by ARUP for clinical application or training of students in various histopathology classes. Our initial viewer was utilized for teaching a class of 120 students in the fall of 2013 and a class in the spring of 2014. Even with the current experimental ViSUS server Atlantis, the classes have been very successful and we are hoping to set a ViSUS server within ARUP Laboratories (ARUP) for educational / clinical applications. The technology gap that would be overcome with the work in this proposal, is the creation of a web server that facilitates the upload, conversion and access of the data, as well as improvements of the ViSOAR tool with additional components that facilitate image based clinical applications. The development of this new capability leverages the current infrastructure already developed and would fill a key gap in facilitating user access to the data without direct support from the visus team. We envision this as a key step forward for making the technology widely available and develop opportunities in science applications, education, and commercial pathology applications. In particular we seek support from BIDAC in the development of a web server based application that can be used as a front end for the visus data streaming services, along with image data management system that allows users to have personal accounts and shared pointers to the data. In addition, the environment should enable automated data conversion so that individual users can upload data in formats like svs, tiff, and other and quickly provide a web link that makes it available for streaming and visualization into ViSOAR as well as simplified javascript viewer.

Progress
We created a web server based front end for the VISUS data streaming services, where users can be given personal accounts and multiple data formats are automatically converted to our proprietary format. This web server will be used in upcoming conferences in Hematopathology.

General contribution
In contrast to existing tools, this web based solution enables easy access to high resolution images for histological applications without any platform restrictions. This solution can be used for teaching and presentations or workshops during conferences.
